An NPI lookup is a search of the public National Provider Identifier records that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) publishes through NPPES. Every health care provider in the United States who bills electronically — physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, therapists, pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics — is assigned a unique 10-digit NPI, and the record attached to that number is public. What an NPI does and doesn't tell you
An NPI is an administrative identifier — it tells you who a provider is in the national system, and it's a reliable way to tell apart providers who share a common name. It is not a license, a rating, or a review. The presence of an NPI does not confirm that a provider holds an active license, is board certified, participates in any insurance network, or is accepting new patients. Those are separate checks: a license is verified through the relevant state board, board certification through the certifying board, and network status directly with the insurer.
